Prevent 2010: The London Story

The Government Office for London’s fourth annual Prevent Conference, Prevent 2010: The London Story, was held at the prestigious Tate Britain, on the Millbank. The Conference looked at the journey of Prevent over the years, mapping its progress and its successes, and speakers spoke about their vision for the future.
Closing the Ethnic Minority Employment Gap in London

On the 5th March the Government Office for London in partnership with the Black Training and Enterprise Group hosted the first of two seminars on how to close the ethnic minority employment gap in London. The seminar brought bring together experts, practitioners and stakeholders engaged in tackling BME worklessness to pool ideas on what works and to develop recommendations for how the existing systems can be made to work better.
Reducing Reoffending conference

Working together to end violence against women and girls in London

To coincide with International Women's Day on Monday 8 March, Government Office for London organised Working together to end violence against women and girls in London, an event aimed at raising the profile of violence against women and girls and securing sustainable local investment in services. Attendees included local authority Chief Executives and Directors and local councillors, and there were speeches from Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, and the Rt Hon Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, Leader of the House of Lords. The event served to engender a shared sense of responsibility for ending violence against women and girls. To help attendees better understand this agenda Government Office for London provided individualised briefing packs which highlighted, using the Government's Ready Reckoner, the likely prevalence of domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking offences within their local area.
London Regional Committee

The Minister for the Cabinet office, the Olympics and London gave evidence to the London Select Committee on Wednesday 24 February. This covered both the subject of their first inquiry, ‘London’s Population and the 2011 Census’ and the work of the Government Office for London (GOL) and I accompanied the Minister at the hearing.
Young Mayors at GOL

The Young Mayor Network (london) is a new and growing partnership between the 4 London Boroughs which have established Young Mayors (Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Lambeth), to co-ordinate efforts across London, share resources and encourage other boroughs to initiate their own Young Mayor Schemes.
Future Jobs Fund

We are now in a position where 11,500 job bids have been approved across London, from locally focussed bids through to large national bids. Jobs included are as diverse as sports coaches to community recycling posts, childcare to forestry.
The opportunity for further FJF bids from London’s Local Authorities and their partners continues, currently monthly bidding rounds will continue until the end of November 2010.
Transforming Londons Public Services Event, March 2nd

GOL and the London School of Economics hosted the above event to look at the opportunities that collaboration within boroughs and across London offers. The event drew together senior stakeholders from Departments across Whitehall, London Local Authorities, local and regional service delivery partners, and pan London organisations.
Hope on a Rope

On 12 February, under the recently launched ‘Civil Service London’ banner, Chris Hayes, Regional Director of GOL and other civil servants from across the country abseilled down Riverwalk House, to help save lives in Haiti. The event raised nearly £5,000.
