Government Office for London

Making Government work for Londoners

As part of the national Government office Network we work to help make sure that local services are delivered effectively for Londoners.  We speak up for London when new policies are being developed by government departments and make sure that Londoners benefit from all the help which is available from central government.  We fund and deliver a range of programmes on behalf of nine government departments.  We work to bring together key people and organisations so that Londoners receive better services because everyone is working together.  Since 2006 we have reduced our running costs by 30%. We have recently set ourselves 5 Key Aims for 2009/10.

Our Aims

Improving London’s economy

By understanding the impacts of the economic downturn in London and prospects for recovery, GOL will work with partners to deliver 'Real Help Now' for people, families and businesses. Since April 2009, we have helped to minimise business insolvencies and job losses in the Capital by persuading over two thirds of local authorities to sign the government's Prompt Payment Code. We have also helped to create 8,300 potential jobs for London's long term unemployed young people through the Future Jobs Fund.

GOL works with partners to anticipate where and how government policies need to be developed to improve future provision for Londoners and the capital.  By bringing all the key partners together GOL facilitates an agreed view on where future investment is needed.  Since April 2009 we have carried out a London wide Strategic Housing land Availability Assessment with the Greater London Authority to make sure that affordable housing is made available for the future needs of London.

Moving to a low carbon economy

We work with the Greater London Authority, the London Development Agency and London Councils to develop London’s role as a leading low carbon world city and a low carbon economy.  Since April 2009 we have developed a joint position with our partners to present London as a world leader at the Climate Change Talks in Copenhagen in December 2009 and have reduced our own carbon footprint by two floors of our Millbank office.

Working together for a better London

We work to develop and maintain key partnerships between the organisations that deliver services for the residents of London so that they can win more flexibility from Government and deliver more for Londoners.  Since April 2009 we have developed the London Child Poverty awards and helped the five Olympic host boroughs to agree ways of improving employment prospects and housing delivery in those boroughs.

Supporting London Authorities

GOL develops and delivers key programmes on behalf of many government departments to make sure that they work for Londoners.  We helped London boroughs to secure over £5million of funding for community safety projects in 2009.  We also coordinated the London response to the swine flu pandemic and helped London schools exceed national targets for achieving healthy School status by 5% in 2009.

 London Schools are Officially Healthy

The London Healthy Schools programme coordinated by GOL surpasses the national target of 75% achieving Healthy School Status by December 2009.  Currently 80% of London schools are Healthy Schools with a further 4% expected to gain this status by the end of the year.

Youth Dashboard

The London Serious Youth Violence Board’s Data Set (or “Dashboard”) enables you to view a range of key data at a regional and borough level.  The aim is to move away from the negative connotations of young people and provide a richer, more balanced picture through a series of key selected indicators across relevant issues of concern affecting young people. Apprenticeships Week: 1-5 February 2010

Research shows there are strong business benefits for organisations who offer Apprenticeships but we also know it makes a huge difference to the young people who participate in the scheme.  There is also evidence from British Chamber of Commerce research that those who employ apprentices have benefited their bottom line and feel that they are coming out of the recession stronger. For more information click this link
